March LGBT Events in Ft. Lauderdale

On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political Events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars. With that in mind, here are the events I want to highlight for March 2013:

Friday, March 1 – Opening Reception for Stonewall National Museum & Archives Exhibit – 6:00pm – 8:00pm Stonewall National Museum & Archives,1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Opening reception of photo essay by local media artist Kim Cohane featuring profiles of creative LGBTQ youth. Kim and many any artists depicted will be present. Sunday, March 3 – SunServe’s Second Annual Hat and Garden Party – 7:00pm – 5:00pm. Enjoy traditional English fair in Lori Parrish's Enchanted Garden, in Davie, FL, and marvel at one of the largest orchid collections in Broward County. Monday, March 4 – Dining Out For Life Host Committee Event – 6:00pm. Chill Wine Lounge, 1828 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL. As you might have heard, Broward House has been granted the only South Florida license for the huge international event Dining Out For Life. This event, presented by Subaru, takes place in 42 cities around the world simultaneously on the same day every year. This year it will fall on Thursday, April 25th. We will be having our first Host Committee meeting this coming Monday, March 4, at 6:00 pm at the Chill Wine Lounge located at 1828 E. Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304 (right next door to the Gateway movie theater). We will vote on committee chairs, plus also take a look at & hand out the Dining Out For Life packages we have created for the restaurants. Wednesday, March 6 – National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Winter Party Opening Reception – 7:00pm. – 9:30pm. The Shelbourne Beach Resort, 1801 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, FL. Thursday, March 7 – Taste of Pride 7:00pm – 9:00pm – Ft Lauderdale War Memorial at Holiday Park, Cordova Rd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316. The night will feature local GLBT & GLBT Friendly businesses showcasing food, wine and more. The night will also feature special presentations on Boutique Wines, Cocktail Mixing and Food with special guest presenters. Doors will open at 7pm. Thursday, March 7 – National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Winter Party ArtScape Event – 7:00pm.–11:00pm. Location: FIFTY at Viceroy Miami 485 Brickell Ave, Miami. GA $25 Advance/$30 Day of. Join celebrity Jessica Clark for the opening event of Her Winter Party at the fabulous FIFTY, a private lounge atop Viceroy Miami. Wednesday, March 8 – MACK POWER LUNCH CELEBRATES 8 YEARS 11:30am – 1:30pm at The Capital Grille, 2430 East Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. At the beginning of every Power Lunch we offer approx. 30 minutes to introduce yourself and chat with fellow attendees in a social setting. Friday, March 8 – National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Winter Party Urge: Mercury Rising Event– 10:00pm to 07:00am. Location: Cameo Nightclub 1445 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Saturday, March 9 – Movies at Stonewall – 7:00pm. Stonewall National Museum & Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Christopher and His Kind. In 1931 budding author Christopher Isherwood goes to Berlin at the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden for the gay sex that abounds in the city. Whilst working as an English teacher his housemates include bewigged old queen Gerald Hamilton and would-be actress Jean Ross, who sings tunelessly in a seedy cabaret club. They and others he meets get put into his stories. After a fling with sexy rent boy Caspar he falls for street sweeper Heinz, paying medical bills for the boy's sickly mother, to the disapproval of her other son, Nazi Gerhardt. With Fascism rapidly rising Christopher returns to London with Heinz but is unable to prevent his return to Germany when his visa expires. Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 – PrideFest South Florida – 12:00pm – 7:00pm – The War Memorial Auditorium and Holiday Park800 NE 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL. PrideFest is a celebration and tribute to the LGBT community and its unique culture. Taking place at the very popular   The War Memorial Auditorium and Holiday Park, Fort Lauderdale  is a weekend long event which includes non-stop local, regional and national entertainment, an outdoor market place featuring over 150 vendors, over 25 food booths, frozen cocktails, beer and cocktails,  a dance/karoke  tent and many more fun and exciting surprises. http://pridesouthflorida.org/

Saturday, March 9 – National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Winter Party Under One Sun Pool Party – CARNIVAL Event – 12:00pm to 06:00pm. The Shelbourne Beach Resort, 1801 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, FL. GA $20. Explore the endangered coastal strand vegetation, rock jetty and shoreline, getting an intimate look at the animals and plants that call this area home. Monday, March 11 & Tuesday March 12– Equality Florida Lobby Days – Florida State Capital, 400 S. Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399. Be a part of one of our most important events of the year. Join us on March 11 & 12 in Tallahassee for Equality Florida’s Annual Lobby Days! This year we will be lobbying on a statewide non-discrimination bill that would prohibit LGBT discrimination in employment and housing; and a domestic partnership bill that would allow couples anywhere in the state to register and receive important state benefits. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Florida’s first openly gay state representatives, Joe Saunders and David Richardson. Tuesday, March 12 – National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Winter Party Winter Sunset Event - 12:00pm to 07:00pm. Location: Island House Resort 1129 Fleming Street, Key West. FREE. For those who don’t want the party to end, Key West’s Island House Resort offers you the chance to rest your mind, body and soul after WPF. This all-male, clothing-optional resort invites you to a free pool party with DJ Robbie Leslie celebrating the 20th Edition of WPF. Enjoy sunshine, music, cocktails and new friends in a frisky environment as you close WPF island-style. Saturday, March 16 – Movies at Stonewall– 7pm. Stonewall National Museum & Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Das Boot (1981 German). It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so-called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served. http://www.stonewallnationalmuseum.org/filmseries.html

Sunday, March 17 – Equality Florida Miami Gala – 5:30pm. Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach. Tickets $125. Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Through lobbying, grassroots organizing, education, and coalition building, we are changing Florida so that no one suffers harassment or discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. http://eqfl.org/miamigala/

Thursday, March 21 – The Pride Center’s Dining With Pride at Mojo – Lunch and Dinner. Mojo Restaurant 4140 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308. Thursday, March 21 – Macy’s Benefit to Support The Broward House AIDs Walk Team – 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Macy’s 2314 E. Sunrise Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale. On March 21, Macy's Galleria joins forces with the Broward House AIDS Walk team to help raise funds to help those in South Florida living with the disease. There will be cocktails and appetizers by Alibi Catering Services, informal fashion shows presented by Papi and Calvin Klein underwear, complimentary consultations by the Art of Shaving and Aveda Salons, plus everyone receives 20% discounts throughout the store. The event will be hosted by South Beach Diva and reality cast member of the Real Housewives of Miami, Elaine Lancaster. Thursday, March 21 – Wine Tasting & Benefit for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) – 6:00pm – 10:00pm. Chill Wine Lounge, 1828 E. Sunrise Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale. THIS IS AN OPEN EVENT & ALL ARE WELCOME. We will be asking for a $20 donation at the door, which will benefit the charity as well as give you TWO FEATURED WINE DRINK TICKETS. Thursday, March 21 – Reception for World AIDS Museum Exhibition – 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Stonewall National Museum & Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale. The World AIDS Museum was an idea that grew out of the Fort Lauderdale based group Pozitive Attitudes, a topic driven support group for HIV positive individuals. Exhibition includes time line, major events and people with the AIDS epidemic. http://www.stonewallnationalmuseum.org/

Sunday, March 24 – Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival – 8:00am – Noon. South Beach Park, Fort Lauderdale. In 2012, the directors of Florida AIDS Walk re-invented the event as Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival, moving the entire experience to Fort Lauderdale’s beautiful beach, and cutting the length of the Walk in half to make room for a celebrity-filled concert at the Walk’s end.  As we look to 2013 and beyond, we hope to see Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival continue to grow, and take its place among some of the larger AIDS Walks in the country which raise millions of dollars to support the community every year! Florida AIDS Walk is produced by Event 360 for AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention, education, accessible healthcare, research and patient advocacy.  In Florida, AHF currently serves more than 15,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. Thursday, March 28 – Reception for World AIDS Museum Exhibition – 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Stonewall National Museum & Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale. The World AIDS Museum was an idea that grew out of the Fort Lauderdale based group Pozitive Attitudes, a topic driven support group for HIV positive individuals. Exhibition includes time line, major events and people with the AIDS epidemic.  http://www.stonewallnationalmuseum.org/
