March 2015 LGBT Events in Ft Lauderdale


On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars.

Tuesday, March 3 – Mack Power Lunch – 11:30am – 1:30pm at Thasos Greek Taverna, 3330 East Oakland Park Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale. At the beginning of every Power Lunch we offer approx. 30 minutes to introduce yourself and chat with fellow attendees in a social setting. There may be a very brief presentation by an event sponsor to share insights and industry information. Thursday, March 5, 2015 – GLLN CLE Luncheon – 11:45am – 1:15pm. Timpano Italian Chop House, 450 Las Olas Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale. Cost: $25 members; $30 non-members. Includes appetizers, entree, dessert, soda, coffee/tea, tax and tip. SPEAKER: The Hon. Wilfredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney For The Southern District Of Florida. Mr. Ferrer will provide an overview of how the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice handle LGBT issues, including employment, hate crimes, jury selection, ethics, bullying, among other issues of interest.

This will be a very exciting seminar, and is the first time that the United States Attorney has addressed the GLLN. Because this topic will be of interest to all, even though we have applied for 1 CLE credit, THIS LUNCHEON IS OPEN TO EVERYONE. Thursday, March 5, 2015 – Broward Equality Connection at Scarfone's! – 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Scarfone’s Wilton Manors. Please join us at Scarfone’s for an Equality Connection in Fort Lauderdale! There will be delicious complimentary light bites and unique drink specials, graciously provided by Scarfone’s. We’ll be joined by Equality Florida staff and our local South Florida leadership team who will give us an update on the march toward full equality and more information about our work in Broward County and across the state. Thursday, March 5 – Shades of Pride Leather Social at Stonewall Museum – 7:00pm – 9:00pm.Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. Join us in your leather (or button down shirt) for a cultural and social get-together as we celebrate Leather Pride: Shades of Pride at Stonewall, surrounded by the exhibit Stroke: From Under the Mattress to the Museum Wall, a historical retrospective of sexy and erotic illustrations by artists who created works for the gay male magazines from the 1950s to the 1990s. The exhibit is presented in collaboration with the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City and Stonewall National Museum & Archives. Light refreshments will be served. Sunday, March 8, 2015 Closing Exhibit Reception & Gallery Talk with Hunter O’Hanian – 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Stonewall National Museum Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. Take advantage of this last chance to see the exhibit Stroke: From Under the Mattress to the Museum Wall with a guided tour and discussion of the exhibit led by Hunter O’Hanian, Museum Director, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City, the only accredited gay art museum in the world. Exploring magazine titles such as Physique Pictorial, Honcho, Mandate and Drummer the presentation examines the specific lives of many of the artists and the work they created, including accomplished artists like Tom of Finland, Antonio Lopez, George Stavrinos, and less well known, but closely followed artists such as Colt, the Hun, Harry Bush, Rex, and Michael Kirwan.www.stonewall-museum.org

Tuesday, March 10 – Mack Mixer Fort Lauderdale – 6:30pm - 9:00pm. Dapur Asian Tapas, 1620 N. Federal Highway,Fort Lauderdale, FL  There’s no doubt MACK continues to redesign how business people create new relationships and establish friendships - regardless of sexuality. Thursday, March 12  – Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Gay and Lesbian Business Xchange (GLBX) Business After Hours – 5:30pm - 7:00pm. TBD. Broward County's premiere gay-friendly networking organization, maximizing our member’s business profitability. The GLBX Business After Hours receptions are a key element in creating and fostering these relationships. The GLBX meets either the second or the fourth Thursday of each month, depending on venue. Friday, March 13 – SunServe Silver Serve Luncheon – 11:00am – 1:00pm (Second Friday of the Month). ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL. Every Second Friday of the Month. SunServe is a model 501(c)(3) nonprofit social service agency serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community in South Florida. We provide high quality, compassionate, and progressive care for all, including those in financial need, minorities, youth, seniors, families, and those with life-challenging physical or emotional conditions. Saturday, March 14 –Sunshine Cathedral Performance: Leslie Jordan – 8:00pm. Sunshine Cathedral MCC, 1480 SW 9th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. Leslie new one-man show “Say Cheese! My Life in front of the Camera” humorously examines his life in front of the camera; more specifically, his relationship with the camera of good friend and professional photographer Jim Cox. Cox’s photos of Leslie and friends are featured prominently, as the show’s subject matter. Sunday, March 15 – 2015 Equality Florida Miami Gala – Periz Art Museum Miami. 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Join us for this sparkling event that includes sumptuous hors d'oeuvres, delicious cocktails, the annual "State of the State" address by Equality Florida CEO Nadine Smith, and entertainment by celeb DJ Karin Ward. Wednesday, March 18 – The Equality Garden Club – The Equality Park Garden Club meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month except December.  It is a Gay and straight friendly garden club with a variety of plant related events.  Meetings include a guest speaker with a horticultural topic, plant exchange, raffle table, and refreshments. Wednesday, March 18 – GFLGLCC Quarterly Networking Luncheon 11:30am - 1:30 pm. J. Mark’s Restaurant, 1007 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Thursday, March 19 – GLLN Happy Hour – 6:00pm – 8:00pm. TBD. Happy Hours are on the 3rd Thursday of every month at various locations. The mission for the Gay & Lesbian Lawyers Network is to provide a social network in which gay, lesbian and gay friendly lawyers can develop their practices through friendships, referral relationships and professional development. Thursday, March 19 – The Pride Center’s Founders Circle Reception – 6:00 – 8:00pm. Law Offices of Selzer & Weiss, 1515 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, FL 33305. The Founder's Circle are individuals who make a monthly gift of $100 to the Pride Center. Saturday, March 21 – Island City Art Walk – Held on the 3rd Saturday of each month, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m., November through April, along the 1.1 mile Wilton Drive, in the Wilton Manors Art and Entertainment District. The official participants include galleries, eclectic stores, cafes, boutiques and upscale restaurants, which will host over 40 local artists. This is a grassroots collaboration bringing culture and business together for the public to enjoy. http://www.islandcityartwalk.com/

Saturday, March 21 – Stonewall Museum Mixer with World AIDS Museum 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Stonewall Museum – Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. Experience both of Wilton Manors’ world-class museums on the 3rd Friday of each month.  Free admission and free Hopper Shuttle Bus service to/from Stonewall Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive and the World AIDS Museum, 1201 NE 26th Street (in Wilton Station). Sunday, March 22 – Florida Aids Walk 2015 – 9:00am. Fort Lauderdale Beach, 801 Seabreeeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale. oin us on the beach for food trucks, tents in the sand and incredible musical acts – all there to thank you, our Walkers and Sponsors for your commitment and support.  We want for YOU to be a part of the fun! Sunday, March 29 – Lambda Legal in Fort Lauderdale 2015 at Bonnet House – 5:00pm – 7:30pm. Our annual Broward County fundraiser celebrates the many victories in the LGBT and HIV positive movements in the past year. This year our honoree is Stephen Draft, who recently retired from his leadership post at the Bonnet House. Join almost 400 supporters of Lambda Legal, the country’s largest national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT persons and those living with HIV, at this signature event. Come for cocktails and hors d’hoeuvres, to honor Stephen Draft and to hear more about Lambda Legal’s recent accomplishments and significant upcoming work.
