May 2020 LGBT Events in Ft Lauderdale

On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars.

Friday, May 1 – Queer As Folk Reunion - "May Day Home Stay Gay Play, Hosted by CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers - 2 p.m. We are very excited to announce that this Friday, May 1, CenterLink and the cast of Queer as Folk to present “May Day Home Stay Gay Play: The 20th Anniversary QAF Cast & Crew Reunion Event to Raise funds for CenterLink - The Community of LGBTQ+ Centers”. We’ll also raise important funds for CenterLink and its network of over 250 local community centers in the U.S. and around the world. The event will take place LIVE on Friday, May 1st, at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET on YouTube. Scott Lowell, who played Ted, will host the event that will feature actors Sharon Gless, Peter Paige, Michelle Clunie, Hal Sparks, Randy Harrison and Robert Gant, alongside creators Ron Cowen and Dan Lipman. Other names are expected to be announced shortly. In addition to chats and special conversations with the cast about the ground-breaking Showtime show, fans who tune in will have the opportunity to bid on Queer as Folk memorabilia and donate funds to support CenterLink and its network of over 250 LGBTQ community centers. Thursday, May 7 - Conversation and Reading with Esther Newton - 6:30 pm. Join Stonewall National Museum & Archive for a conversation and reading with award winning lesbian, anthropologist, author and educator Esther Newton. In conjunction with our current exhibition: Safe Haven - Gay Life in the 1950s Cherry Grove. SNMA Executive Director Hunter O'Hanian will talk with Esther about her time in Cherry Grove and her award winning book Cherry Grove, Fire Island: Sixty Years in America's First Gay and Lesbian Town (Duke University Press, 2014). Wednesday, May 13 – Dolphin Democrats Meeting – Second Wednesday of Each Month. 7 The Dolphin Democrats will be hosting their first ever Virtual Membership Meeting & Endorsement via Zoom.  At the meeting we will be endorsing one candidate to the State Attorney seat and one candidate to the Public Defender seat. To maintain the integrity of the meeting and the endorsement process, this meeting will be open only to current members. A Zoom invitation to register will be emailed to members at least 1 day before the meeting. All voting members in attendance will be able to participate in the endorsement process that will take place by voting electronically during the

Wednesday, May 13 - Conversation with Jonathan David Katz - 6:30 pm. ZOOM conversation and slide talk with noted scholar, educator and curator, Jonathan David Katz. As we grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world, SNMA Executive Director Hunter O'Hanian will talk with Jonathan about works of art made in the 1980s and '90s during the height of the AIDS crisis and how it relates to the current pandemic. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions. Tuesday, May 26 - Conversation and Reading with Julio Capó, Jr. - 6:30 pm for a ZOOM conversation and reading with historian and educator, Julio Capó, Jr. Julio will be in conversation with SNMA Executive Director Hunter O'Hanian about his book, Welcome to Fairyland, (UNC Press, 2017) as they discuss queer life in South Florida in the early part of the 20th century. September 2015 LGBT Events in Ft Lauderdale
