February 2015 LGBT Events in Ft. Lauderdale

On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars.

Tuesday, February 3 – Stroke: From Under the Mattress to the Museum Wall – VIP Exhibit Opening– Public Opening Stonewall National Museum and Archives – 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Stonewall National Museum Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. Join us for the public reception for the opening of Stroke: From Under the Mattress to the Museum Wall. Stonewall Society members gather at the opening of a special exhibit, presented in partnership with Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York – Catering and refreshments by Bill’s (formerly Alibi Catering) and Ketel One. Stroke: From Under the Mattress to the Museum Wall, is a historical retrospective of sexy and erotic illustrations by artists who made work for the gay male magazines from the 1950s to the 1990s. Thursday, February 5 – GLLN CLE Luncheon – 11:45am – 1:15pm. Timpano Italian Chop House, 450 Las Olas Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale. Cost: $25 members; $30 non-members. Includes appetizers, entree, dessert, soda, coffee/tea, tax and tip. TOPIC: “UPDATE ON LGBT LAW” SPEAKER: Greg Nevins, Esq., Lambda Legal, Workplace Fairness Program Strategist in the Southern Regional Office, Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Nevins will provide a legal update on: Same-Sex Marriage; Florida LGBT Family Law, LGBT Employment Law; HIV related Legal Issues; and Transgender Legal Issues. This will be a very exciting seminar, and is the 3rd year in a row when we have been fortunate enough to have Lambda Legal Speakers address the GLLN. Because this topic will be of interest to all, even though we have applied for 1 CLE credit, THIS LUNCHEON IS OPEN TO EVERYONE. Broward County's premiere gay-friendly networking organization, maximizing our member’s business profitability. Friday, February 13 – SunServe Silver Serve Luncheon – 11:00am – 1:00pm (Second Friday of the Month). ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL. Every Second Friday of the Month. SunServe is a model 501(c)(3) nonprofit social service agency serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community in South Florida. We provide high quality, compassionate, and progressive care for all, including those in financial need, minorities, youth, seniors, families, and those with life-challenging physical or emotional conditions. Saturday, February 14 – Pride Center Bingo – Second Saturdays of Each Month. 6:30 p.m. doors open; 7:30 p.m. games begin Main Hall, Schubert Building. Bingo; proceeds benefit The Pride Center. Saturday, February 14 – Zumba Fundraiser for Poverello – Express your love though dance and aerobics and help support Poverello's specialty food pantry. The event will be held at The Pride Center at Equality Park (2040 N. Dixie Highway) Building B. Two classes at 1 pm & 2:30 pm. Suggested Donation $12 per class. Saturday, February 14 – Stonewall National Museum & Archives presents Broadway Star Cheyenne Jackson at the Parker Playhouse – 6:00 pm open bar and silent auction. 8:00 pm performance. Parker Playhouse, 707 NE 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33338. Wednesday, February 18 – The Equality Garden Club – The Equality Park Garden Club meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month except December.  It is a Gay and straight friendly garden club with a variety of plant related events.  Meetings include a guest speaker with a horticultural topic, plant exchange, raffle table, and refreshments. Thursday, February 19 – GLLN Happy Hour – 6:00pm – 8:00pm. 219 South Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale 33301. Happy Hours are on the 3rd Thursday of every month at various locations. The mission for the Gay & Lesbian Lawyers Network is to provide a social network in which gay, lesbian and gay friendly lawyers can develop their practices through friendships, referral relationships and professional development. Saturday, February 21 – Pride Center’s Evening In Paradise “Mykonos” – 7:00pm – 9:30pm. Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve located at 1937 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, Florida. Four the 4th year, The Pride Center is teaming up with the City of Wilton Manors to present Evening in Paradise. This year's theme is Mykonos - Gods and Goddesses. Throughout the evening, guests will be entertained and delighted by the Gods and Goddesses from Greek Mythology at the Richardson House in Wilton Manors. Food, music and decorations will tantalize the senses. Be a part of this exciting party and celebrate Mykonos- Gods and Goddesses created by Bobby Kyser of Panache Style! Proceeds will benefit The Pride Center’s vital programs and services along with Wilton Manor’s Island City Foundation. Last year, over 25,000 people attended Center activities; outreach activities over the past year directly impacted another 30,000+ individuals in South Florida. Evening in Paradise, now in its fourth year, has grown to represent the signature Spring fundraising and entertainment event for The Center and the community. Tickets are $120 per person. “Next Gen” tickets for guests 18-35 are $50.

Saturday, February 21 – Island City Art Walk – Held on the 3rd Saturday of each month
7:00 - 10:00 p.m., November through April, along the 1.1 mile Wilton Drive, in the Wilton Manors Art and Entertainment District. The official participants include galleries, eclectic stores, cafes, boutiques and upscale restaurants, which will host over 40 local artists. This is a grassroots collaboration bringing culture and business together for the public to enjoy. http://www.islandcityartwalk.com/

Saturday, February 21 – Stonewall Museum Mixer with World AIDS Museum 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Stonewall Museum – Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. Experience both of Wilton Manors’ world-class museums on the 3rd Friday of each month.  Free admission and free Hopper Shuttle Bus service to/from Stonewall Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive and the World AIDS Museum, 1201 NE 26th Street (in Wilton Station). Tuesday, March 3 – Mack Power Lunch – 11:30am – 1:30pm at Thasos Greek Taverna, 3330 East Oakland Park Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale. At the beginning of every Power Lunch we offer approx. 30 minutes to introduce yourself and chat with fellow attendees in a social setting. There may be a very brief presentation by an event sponsor to share insights and industry information. Saturday, March 14 –Sunshine Cathedral Performance: Leslie Jordan – 8:00pm. Sunshine Cathedral MCC, 1480 SW 9th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. Leslie new one-man show “Say Cheese! My Life in front of the Camera” humorously examines his life in front of the camera; more specifically, his relationship with the camera of good friend and professional photographer Jim Cox. Cox’s photos of Leslie and friends are featured prominently, as the show’s subject matter. The Founder's Circle are individuals who make a monthly gift of $100 to the Pride Center. Sunday, March 29 – Lambda Legal in Fort Lauderdale 2015 at Bonnet House – 5:00pm – 7:30pm. Our annual Broward County fundraiser celebrates the many victories in the LGBT and HIV positive movements in the past year. This year our honoree is Stephen Draft, who recently retired from his leadership post at the Bonnet House. Join almost 400 supporters of Lambda Legal, the country’s largest national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT persons and those living with HIV, at this signature event. On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political Events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars. With that in mind, here are the events I want to highlight for March 2013: March Events: Friday, March 1 – Opening Reception for Stonewall National Museum & Archives Exhibit – 6:00pm – 8:00pm Stonewall National Museum & Archives,1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Opening reception of photo essay by local media artist Kim Cohane featuring profiles of creative LGBTQ youth. Kim and many any artists depicted will be present.
