Thursday, September 3  – Stonewall Society opening night for STRIKE A POSE  7:00-9:00 pm. Stonewall Gallery on Wilton Drive, 2157 Wilton Drive. Stonewall Society members are encouraged to bring guests with whom they want to share their interest and passion in the work of Stonewall National Museum & Archives. Exhibition dates: September 3 – October 4, 2015. This is not your fathers “ballroom”. Coinciding with the Southern Comfort conference hosted in Fort Lauderdale, one of the largest gatherings of the transgender community in the world, this exhibit documents the creation and development of the gay underground ballroom “vogue” scene in South Florida. With explorations of gender, race and social class served up with attitude as young participants walk the runway, exposure to this LGBT subculture has been limited, for most, to Madonna’s 1990 hit single “Vogue”, and the 1991 documentary, Paris is Burning. This Stonewall exhibition will provide a deeper appreciation of the modern drag culture, styles, and catwalk performances that continue to inspire, and support the creativity of a proudly resilient gay subculture in South Florida. Curated by SNMA Director of Community Engagement Emery Grant. RSVP to David Jobin at david@stonewall-museum.org
