February 2014 LGBT Events in Ft. Lauderdale


On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars.

Tuesday, February 4  – Stonewall Book Club 7:00pm. Stonewall National Museum & Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 - Join the Stonewall Book Club in a discussion of Specimen Days by Michael Cunningham (Pulitzer Prize and Lambda Literary Award -winning author of The Hours). Specimen Days is a 2005 novel by American writer Michael Cunningham. It contains three stories: one that takes place in the past, one in the present, and one in the future. Each of the three stories depicts three central, semi-consistent character-types: a young boy, a man, and a woman. Walt Whitman’s poetry is also a common thread in each of the three stories, and the title is from Whitman’s own prose works. The film rights to the book have been optioned by American movie producer Scott Rudin, who has turned Cunningham’s previous novel The Hours into an Academy Award-winning movie.

Wednesday, February 5  – Gay Writes – Stonewall Writers Group 7:00pm - Also meets Wednesdays – February 5, 12, 19 and 26. Stonewall National Museum & Archives, 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. Gay Writes gives writers a weekly opportunity to share their work, gain valuable feedback and discuss the challenges and joys of writing with others in an LGBT affirming space. All genres and walk-ins welcome. Please be LGBT or otherwise writing about a LGBT character. Currently a mixed group of nine meets regularly to read a maximum of 5 pages each week. Thursday, February 6  – 2014 February GLLN Luncheon 12:00pm – 1:30pm. Timanpo 450 Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.  The mission for the Gay & Lesbian Lawyers Network is to provide a social network in which gay, lesbian and gay friendly lawyers can develop their practices through friendships, referral relationships and professional development. Thursday, February 6 – Black Gay Pride - Opening Art Reception– 7:00pm at The Pride Center, 2040 N. Dixie HWY, Wilton Manors, Florida 33305. Thursday, February 13  – Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Gay and Lesbian Business Xchange (GLBX) Business After Hours. 5:30pm - 7:00pm. Events by the Grateful Palate, 3003 NE 32nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Broward County's premiere gay-friendly networking organization, maximizing our member’s business profitability. The GLBX Business After Hours receptions are a key element in creating and fostering these relationships. The GLBX meets either the second or the fourth Thursday of each month, depending on venue.


Thursday, February 13  – Come Out and Play –7:00pm – 10:00pm. C&I Studios in Fat Village, 541 NW 1st Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. Featuring an exculive shoing of Photography by Kyle Poff. Friday, February 14  – SunServe Silver Serve Luncheon – 11:00am – 1:00pm. ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL. SunServe is a model 501(c)(3) nonprofit social service agency serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community in South Florida. We provide high quality, compassionate, and progressive care for all, including those in financial need, minorities, youth, seniors, families, and those with life-challenging physical or emotional conditions. Sunday, February 16 – Equality Florida’s Equali-Tea Dance at The Royal Palms Resort & Spa! – 2:00pm – Royal Palms, 717 Breakers Ave., Fort Lauderdale  The Royal Palms’ chic design and tropical comforts along with Florida’s largest statewide LGBT civic rights organization combine to create a fun afternoon of relaxing by the pool, dancing to the music, drink specials, raffles, and a short program about the work of Equality Florida. Tuesday, February 18 – Our Fund Education Seminar Series - Financial Planning for LGBT Parents 6:00pm – 7:00pm – The Pride Center, 2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors, FL. The most important factor in successful estate, financial and gift planning is your involvement. Your professional advisors can help you navigate and provide you with advice but only you can see it to completion. Tuesday, February 18 – CheeseMania 1: A fundraiser for AHF's Florida AIDS Walk – 7:00pm – 9:00pm – New York Grilled Cheese, 2207 Wilton Drive, Fort Lauderdale.  On Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 beginning at 7:00 PM we are throwing a HUGE party to benefit AHF's Florida AIDS Walk: CheeseMania IS ON!!! Mark your calendars ladies and gentlemen; as we will be launching our official commercial LIVE, while raising money for an AMAZING cause! Wednesday, February 19 – The Equality Garden Club – The Equality Park Garden Club meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month except December.  It is a Gay and straight friendly garden club with a variety of plant related events.  Meetings include a guest speaker with a horticultural topic, plant exchange, raffle table, and refreshments. Saturday, February 22 – Pride Center’s Evening in Paradise – Carnaval!  – 7:00pm – 9:30pm. Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve located at 1937 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, Florida. On Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 7:00pm, The Pride Center will collaborate with the City of Wilton Manors to present Evening in Paradise – Carnaval! Proceeds benefit The Pride Center‘s vital programs and services along with Wilton Manor’s Island City Foundation. Evening in Paradise, now in its third year, has grown to represent the signature Spring fundraising and entertainment event for The Center and the community. Throughout the evening, guests will be entertained and delighted by a little bit of Rio de Janeiro at the Richardson House in Wilton Manors. We'll be giving away free Ready for Hillary swag so be sure to stop by our booth! Ready for Hillary is a national grassroots movement encouraging Hillary Clinton to run for president in 2016. At the beginning of every Power Lunch we offer approx. 30 minutes to introduce yourself and chat with fellow attendees in a social setting. March 5 -10 – National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Winter Party Festival  – Launched in 1994 as a one-time charity dance event on the sands of beautiful South Beach, Winter Party Festival has evolved into a week-long series of events benefiting the LGBT community nationally and locally.  A portion of the net precedes of WPF support the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's efforts to take action, build power and create change for LGBT people. The majority of the proceeds are donated to local service organizations through a grant-making process administered by The Miami Foundation.  Over 10,000 guests from around the world attend our annual six-day extravaganza featuring the most spectacular venues, the most unforgettable parties and receptions and the best international DJ talent. http://www.winterparty.com/about-winter-party-festival

Sunday, March 30 – Lambda Legal Garden Party  – 5:00pm – 7:30pm. Bonnet House, 900 North Birch Road, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Please join Lambda Legal for the 10th annual Fort Lauderdale Reception. This annual event, a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception among the lush grounds of the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens will bring together more than 300 of our supporters from across South Florida’s LGBT and allied community to celebrate the work of Lambda Legal.

March LGBT Events in Ft. Lauderdale

On this Blog, I will post a highlight of some of the LGBT non-profit and political Events that are going on in Ft. Lauderdale each month, so folks who want to attend can put them on their Calendars. With that in mind, here are the events I want to highlight for March 2013: March Events: Friday, March 1 – Opening Reception for Stonewall National Museum & Archives Exhibit – 6:00pm – 8:00pm Stonewall National Museum & Archives,1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Opening reception of photo essay by local media artist Kim Cohane featuring profiles of creative LGBTQ youth. Kim and many any artists depicted will be present.
